COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course examines the most salient and contemporary issues in the study of gangs in American Society that include the prevalence, structures, norms, and behaviors exhibited by gang members. It explores why and how gangs form, conditions of membership, and effects on members and society. Gang proliferation, race and gender issues, the relationship between gangs and violence and drugs are also examined. The design and effectiveness of prevention, intervention and suppression policies and programs developed in response to this phenomenon are assessed.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completing this course, you should be able to: 

  1. Explain the current status, historical growth, and projected trends of gang membership in the US and locally.
  2. Describe current research on gang formation and the implications for society and community, local and national.
  3. Identify and classify the types of gangs common in various geographical or societal communities and their effect on social, educational, and criminal justice systems, including social service and health providers, police, courts, and schools.
  4. Assess various approaches, programs, and policies for responding to gang formation and activities.
  5. Synthesize relevant issues in gang formation and functioning and create recommendations for community response.

Part 1: Introduction Gangs have been operating since time immemorial within New Jersey, and their operations extend to different localities. In this research paper, I aim to investigate the nature of gang crime in New Jersey by examining the various types of crime that other gangs within the city have accentuated through research and by interviewing Tom Coleman. Coleman was recently announced as the new chief of the Newark Police Department. Criminal gangs in New Jersey have continued to terrorize the people living within the city, given that today unlike in the past, gangs operate in different cities utilizing their intricate web of networks (Mason et al., 2014). I will conduct primary and secondary research to investigate the nature of crime and how gangs impact crime in New Jersey. The main research methods that I will rely on to find sources that will facilitate my research include the application of keywords such as "Gangs in New Jersey," depending on the Newark Police Department Chief to provide me with the necessary data and statistics on gang crime which will enable me to evaluate and understand the nature of Written Assignment 1 This assignment is designed to provide context for the study of gangs by becoming familiar with the appearance, growth or decline of gangs within your local community and state. Make note of all necessary and relevant information citing for references.  Write a 3-4 Pages Report  Prepare a report on your process (resources, approach, search terms) and your findings, using appropriate references (APA Style). Part I (1 page) will discuss your process, how you went about finding the information. What resources did you use? With whom did you speak? What online sources did you use and how did you find them (search terms, search engine used, search terms used to narrow your search, and the URL of sample sites and information located)? Include questions and responses used in interviews. Part II (2 to 3 pages) will present your findings, appropriately analyzed and referenced (APA Style).
