SOC-3870—Modern Sociological Foundations
This course provides a foundation for an in-depth analysis of social structures. Using the enduring constants of sociological theory such as macro versus micro analysis, agency versus structure, consensus versus conflict, and cultural versus economic factors, the course guides students through the study of the classical formulations of modern sociological theory using the works of Karl Marx, Max Weber, Emile Durkheim, and Talcott Parsons.
After completing this course, you should be able to:
CO 1 Explain the enduring issues basic to the construction of a sociological theory.
CO 2 Analyze the contributions of Karl Marx to sociology.
CO 3 Summarize how Durkheim validated the study of society.
CO 4 Explain Weber's attempts to isolate the unique characteristics of modern society.
CO 5 Explain and evaluate Parsons' theories on orderly and peaceful coexistence in society despite people's natural selfishness (structural functionalism).
CO 6 Compare and evaluate the sociological theories of Marx, Durkheim, Weber, and Parsons using the sociological constants of macro versus micro analysis, agency versus structure, consensus versus conflict, and cultural versus economic factors.
